The old terrace façade, decorative wrought-iron balcony, corrugated awnings, outbuildings and established trees are rendered with expressive brushwork, while the glowing orange sky provides a dramatic contrast to the shadowed buildings below.

The artist’s further identity has not been conclusively established, so we have deliberately avoided making an unsupported attribution. Importantly, however, the painting retains its original Cocks International Australia (CIA), Melbourne gallery label to the reverse. The label titles the work “Terraced Houses” and identifies it as “A Genuine Oil Painting by an Australian Artist” from the company’s Melbourne wholesale gallery.

The surviving label, signature and 1974 date provide an appealing piece of period provenance and firmly place the work within the Australian art market of the era.

Now more than 50 years old, this is a distinctive original Australian streetscape with wonderful 1970s character – ideal for a collector of vintage Australian art, architectural subjects or evocative urban landscapes.

Condition:

Condition: Good vintage condition – see detailed notes below.

• Original oil painting presents well with strong colour and visual impact.

• Signed “St John” and dated ’74 at lower left.

• Original Cocks International Australia gallery label remains attached to the reverse.

• Gallery label identifies the painting as “Terraced Houses”.

• Timber frame presents well with minor marks and wear consistent with age.

• Painting displays normal age-related characteristics appropriate to a work dating from 1974.

• No significant damage immediately apparent.

• Approximate overall framed dimensions: 70 cm x 57 cm.

This is an original vintage artwork dating from 1974 and minor imperfections associated with its age form part of its character and history.

📸 The photos form part of the description – please examine them closely.

Postage & Handling:

📦 All items are carefully wrapped and packaged to ensure they arrive safely at their new forever home.

Due to the size and framed nature of this artwork, collection is also available by arrangement.

Combined postage available – contact us before purchasing for a revised invoice.

International shipping available on request – please message for a quote.

Need to Know More?

Have questions or need more photos?
