An iconic piece of Australian decimal currency history.

Introduced in 1966 when Australia changed from pounds, shillings and pence to decimal currency, the original 50 cent coin was strikingly different from the twelve-sided coin Australians know today. The 1966 issue was produced in a round format and contained 80% silver.

Rising silver prices quickly made the coin’s precious-metal content worth considerably more relative to its face value, and the silver round 50 cent was replaced by a copper-nickel twelve-sided design from 1969.

The reverse carries the Australian Coat of Arms with the familiar kangaroo and emu, while the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
