An atmospheric original Australian watercolour capturing the peaceful coastal landscape of Burrum Heads, Queensland, dated 4 July 1978.

Situated at the mouth of the Burrum River on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, Burrum Heads is renowned for its waterways, tidal landscape and natural coastal setting. This work captures that character beautifully, with a winding waterway leading through the foreground towards the distant water and a stand of distinctly Australian trees rising from the bank.

Executed in a restrained palette of earthy browns, greens, ochres and soft blues, the painting has a wonderful late-1970s character and an appealing sense of depth and tranquillity.

The work is signed “J. Wallis” at lower right and inscribed “BURRUM HEADS 4-7-78” at lower left, providing both the location and exact date of the scene.

While the signature is clearly identifiable as J. Wallis, we have not been able to conclusively establish the artist’s full identity and therefore make no attribution to a particular listed artist.
