Mini Story or Hook:
An appealing Australian studio pottery vase by Bruce Morrow, whose remarkable artistic career spanned both the performing and visual arts.
Before turning to pottery, Morrow was a professional ballet dancer who performed with the National Theatre Ballet and the influential Borovansky Ballet during the 1940s and 1950s. His performances included important Australian productions such as Rex Reid’s Corroboree and the Borovansky Ballet’s full-length production of The Sleeping Princess. After retiring as a performer, he became a highly regarded ballet teacher, including many years teaching at the Australian Ballet School.
Morrow later expressed his creativity through ceramics. This individually wheel-thrown vase, dated 1988, features a softly rounded form with delicate abstract floral decoration in dusty pink, pale green, cream and earthy ochre. Its restrained palette and flowing decoration give it a quiet sense of movement—particularly fitting for an artist whose earlier career was devoted to dance.
