Mini Story or Hook

A superb and well-provenanced Australian modernist armchair designed and made by celebrated Melbourne furniture and interior designer Dario Zoureff.

The chair was commissioned directly from Zoureff in the mid-1960s by the father of its previous owner, who engaged Zoureff to furnish the family home with his furniture. This direct family provenance provides an especially compelling connection to Zoureff’s bespoke furniture and interior-design practice.

The design is quintessentially mid-century, combining a beautifully sculpted timber frame with long sweeping arms, tapered legs and a particularly attractive radiating spindle back.

The chair has now undergone a sympathetic restoration of the timberwork, including full re-staining of the timber frame. This has revived the warmth, colour and grain of the timber while preserving the chair’s original form and vintage character.

Importantly, the original burnt-orange woven upholstery has been retained, including the fixed upholstered seat and back. The combination of restored timber and original period upholstery gives the chair an attractive presentation without sacrificing its authentic 1960s character.

With its sculptural form, strong Australian design credentials and direct family provenance, this is a distinctive piece of Melbourne mid-century furniture.

Condition

Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition – sympathetically restored. Please refer to the detailed description and photographs below.

This is a genuine vintage Dario Zoureff armchair dating from the mid-1960s.

* The sculpted timber frame has undergone a careful restoration, including full re-staining of the timberwork to restore its colour, warmth and grain.

* The timber now presents beautifully while retaining appropriate minor evidence of its age and history.

* The original burnt-orange woven upholstery has been retained rather than replaced.

* The original upholstery has been carefully revived and presents attractively for its age.

* The upholstered seat and back cushioning are fixed in place and are not removable.

* The frame appears solid, stable and serviceable.

* Sweeping sculpted arms, tapered legs and the distinctive decorative radiating spindle back remain intact.

* Upholstery displays minor age-related variations, marks and signs of use consistent with original fabric of this age.

* Minor marks and variations may remain to the restored timberwork, consistent with the sympathetic restoration of a genuine vintage piece rather than refinishing it to an artificial as-new appearance.

* No maker’s label has been identified; however, the chair has direct family provenance confirming that it was commissioned from Dario Zoureff.

* Only the single armchair shown prominently in the photographs is included. Other furniture, decorative cushions and display items are not included.

The restoration has deliberately focused on preserving the chair rather than altering its character. The timber has been restored and fully re-stained while the original upholstery has been retained, providing an appealing balance between refreshed presentation and mid-century authenticity.

📸 The photographs form an important part of the description and condition report. Please examine them carefully as they best illustrate the restored timberwork, original upholstery, age, character and overall presentation of the chair.

As with all genuine vintage furniture, minor signs of age and previous use should be expected and form part of the item’s history and character.
