Large Australian Mid-Century Modern Curved Sofa – Attributed to Dario Zoureff

A spectacular and exceptionally substantial Australian Mid-Century Modern curved sofa, dating from approximately the 1950s–1960s and attributed to Australian designer Dario Zoureff.

Measuring an impressive 267 cm (2.67 metres) in length, this remarkable sofa has a dramatic sweeping serpentine or crescent form, creating a genuine statement piece with considerable architectural presence.

The design features a beautifully curved upholstered seat, distinctive floating buttoned backrest, gently rounded ends and elegant tapered timber legs. Viewed from above, the extent of its flowing organic form is particularly striking.

The sofa retains what appears to be its original yellow woven upholstery, giving it wonderful period character and preserving the appearance of this highly unusual piece of Australian modernist furniture.

Attribution & Provenance

This sofa is attributed to Dario Zoureff, with the attribution supported by particularly interesting provenance.

The sofa was acquired from a private residence furnished with an extensive collection of furniture understood to be by Zoureff, including buffets, a dressing table, bedhead, coffee table and other complementary pieces.

The consistency of the collection and the circumstances in which the pieces were acquired provide strong supporting provenance for the attribution of this sofa.

However, no manufacturer’s label or maker’s mark has been located on the sofa itself. Accordingly, we are offering and describing it as attributed to Dario Zoureff, rather than representing it as a labelled or definitively documented example.

A Remarkable Australian Modernist Sofa

At approximately 2.67 metres long, this is no ordinary three-seater.

Its considerable scale, sweeping curved profile and unusual floating backrest give it a sculptural quality that allows the sofa to be appreciated from multiple angles.

The organic crescent form is particularly effective when positioned away from a wall, making it an outstanding centrepiece for a large living area, architecturally designed home, gallery, reception space or Mid-Century Modern interior.

The term “banana sofa” is sometimes used for furniture of this distinctive curved form, although this example’s substantial proportions and pronounced serpentine profile make it an especially impressive interpretation of the style.

Condition

The sofa is in good vintage condition commensurate with its age.

It appears to retain its original yellow woven upholstery, which displays age-related wear, marks, fading/discolouration and some staining consistent with decades of use.

The sofa is structurally sound and retains its distinctive original form. No obvious major tears have been observed in the upholstery.

The tapered timber legs also display normal age-related wear.

Importantly, we have not reupholstered or extensively restored the sofa. It is being offered with its surviving period upholstery, allowing the purchaser to enjoy its original character or undertake sympathetic professional restoration or reupholstery if desired.
