Mini Story or Hook
A striking piece of Australian Mid-Century Modern furniture by Dario Zoureff, dating from the late 1950s to early 1960s, and offered with particularly strong provenance.
This cabinet comes from the same estate as the Dario Zoureff lounge and chairs we have previously acquired. The original owner commissioned Zoureff furniture for the family home, with this cabinet forming part of the collection that remained with the family.
Its design is beautifully characteristic of the period, combining long, low proportions with a sculptural splayed pedestal base, warm timber finish, contrasting circular handles and an asymmetrical arrangement of cupboards and open shelving. The rounded display shelves at one end are an especially attractive modernist detail.
Interestingly, the cabinet was made to neat imperial proportions of approximately 4 ft wide × 1 ft deep × 2 ft 6 in high, reflecting its Australian manufacture in the pre-metric era.
At only around 1 ft deep, it is also an exceptionally versatile piece. It could be used as a bookcase, display cabinet, drinks cabinet, record cabinet, media unit or low console, providing useful storage without dominating a room.
With its distinctive design, compact proportions and connection to a larger collection of Zoureff furniture from the same estate, this is a wonderful opportunity for the collector of Australian Mid-Century Modern design.
