A striking limited-edition marine sculpture by renowned Australian sculptor Foot Young of Foot Artworks, an artist particularly associated with marine-life sculpture and the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef.

Foot Young has been sculpting dolphins for more than 40 years, drawing upon extensive firsthand experience both above and below the ocean. After travelling extensively by yacht, he settled in the Whitsundays, where marine mammals became a major focus of his sculptural work.

Working extensively in marble, Young also developed techniques for producing his sculptures in cast marble, allowing the characteristics and colouring of stone to be incorporated into individually distinctive works.

This beautiful example depicts a bottlenose dolphin moving through an intricately textured coral reef formation. The smooth, polished form of the dolphin contrasts wonderfully with the rugged reef, producing a sculpture that changes considerably depending on the viewing angle.

The dolphin’s body curves through the reef, with the tail emerging at the rear. Subtle cream, grey and soft pink/coral tones enhance the naturalistic appearance.

Importantly, the sculpture carries Foot Young’s distinctive artist mark and is individually numbered 98/100, identifying this example as number 98 from a limited edition of only 100.

The highly textured coral reef formation appears well preserved. Its irregular edges, cavities and openings are integral to the deliberately naturalistic reef design.

There are minor surface marks, patina and tonal variation consistent with previous display and age.
