Mini Story or Hook:
A beautifully atmospheric original Australian watercolour depicting a tranquil waterside landscape, with gum trees, open country and softly rendered hills surrounding a brilliant blue expanse of water.
The work is signed G. Pearce at the lower left. While we have not been able to conclusively identify the artist, the reverse provides an interesting connection to Warrandyte’s well-known artistic community.
The original backing is stamped:
M. Magilton

Stony Creek Studio was established in Warrandyte in 1973 by Victorian artist and art teacher Walter Magilton, an RMIT-trained artist who became a Fellow of both the Victorian Artists Society and Australian Guild of Realist Artists. Magilton also operated an art school from Stony Creek Studio.
The surviving studio stamp therefore gives the painting particularly appealing local Victorian provenance. While no direct relationship between G. Pearce and Walter Magilton has been established, the work was evidently framed through Magilton’s Stony Creek Studio.
A lovely piece of original Australian art with a strong connection to the Warrandyte arts community.
