Mini Story or Hook

A superb piece of early Australian advertising history, this large original Hudson’s Soap enamel sign was manufactured in Adelaide by A. Simpson & Son Ltd, one of Australia’s important historic metal manufacturers.

A. Simpson & Son produced vitreous enamel advertising signage in Adelaide for major commercial brands, and the surviving manufacturer’s marking can still be seen along the lower edge of this sign.

Hudson’s Soap was founded by Robert Spear Hudson and became a household name through innovative mass marketing and distinctive advertising. This striking example features enormous shadowed HUDSON’S lettering against a vivid green background, accompanied by two illustrated Hudson’s Soap packets and the memorable slogan:

“The time and money Saver – In packets everywhere.”

Measuring approximately 92 × 61 cm (36 × 24 inches), this is an impressive large-format sign with tremendous visual presence. Its combination of Australian manufacture, substantial size, bold typography and genuine aged character makes it particularly appealing to collectors of early advertising, Australiana and industrial history.

A fantastic statement piece for a vintage interior, shop, bar, garage, man cave or serious advertising collection.

Condition

Condition: Good original antique condition for its age – see detailed notes below.

This is a genuine period enamel advertising sign showing the expected evidence of many decades of use and display.

* Strong red, green, white and black colours remain with excellent visual impact.

* Main HUDSON’S SOAP graphics remain bold, clear and highly legible.

* Original enamel surface retains good overall colour and presentation.

* Manufacturer’s marking remains visible along the lower edge and appears consistent with A. Simpson & Son Ltd, Adelaide.

* Expected enamel chips, scratches, marks and losses throughout consistent with age and previous use.

* More noticeable enamel loss and wear around the perimeter and mounting holes.

* Some areas appear to have received historic touching-up/overpainting, particularly around previous areas of wear.

* Surface oxidation and corrosion are present to the reverse, consistent with the sign’s age and former use.

* Original perimeter mounting holes remain present.

* No attempt has been made by us to restore the sign – it is presented with its genuine aged character and patina.

* Structurally presents well and remains an impressive display piece.

The honest wear and patina are an important part of this sign’s history and help distinguish an original period enamel sign from the many later reproduction advertising signs on the market.
