Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderfully characterful vintage Czech lampwork glass drummer, attributed to the tradition of celebrated Czech glass artist Jaroslav Brychta and the Železný Brod school of glassmaking.

Brychta became particularly renowned for imaginative figural glass designs, with musicians among the subjects produced by the Železnobrodské Sklo (ZBS) glassworks.

This charming miniature depicts a formally dressed drummer seated behind a translucent amber glass drum. Despite standing only approximately 9 cm tall, there is an extraordinary amount of detail: a glossy black suit, applied cream hair and beard, pink-toned face and hands, white bow tie and shirt front, and separate metal drumsticks terminating in tiny glass beaters.

These whimsical musician figures were produced in a variety of characters and instruments and make particularly appealing displays when assembled as an orchestra.

An excellent example of the playful yet technically accomplished figural glass for which mid-century Czechoslovakian glassmakers became internationally recognised.

Attribution Note:

The figurine is unmarked and retains no maker’s label. Its form, scale, lampworked construction and musician subject are consistent with Czech/Bohemian musician figurines associated with Železný Brod and designs attributed to Jaroslav Brychta. It is therefore offered as attributed to / in the manner of Jaroslav Brychta and ZBS, rather than as a definitively signed or documented example.
