Mini Story
A striking and atmospheric lion study dating from 1924, this large original oil painting captures a resting lion, lioness and cub in a warm naturalistic setting. The composition is reminiscent of the celebrated wildlife paintings of Hungarian artist Géza Vastagh and reflects the enduring popularity of lion subjects in late 19th and early 20th century art.
The painting is signed “J.M.J.” and dated 1924. The reverse carries the stencil of H.J. Corben & Co., a well-known Melbourne supplier of artists’ materials and framing services, adding an interesting piece of local history to the work.
