Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderfully distinctive signed and numbered work by Martin Jonaš (1924–1996), one of the best-known artists associated with the celebrated Kovačica school of naïve art.

Born in Kovačica in the former Yugoslavia, Jonaš developed an immediately recognisable style depicting rural life through dramatically exaggerated human proportions. His figures are particularly known for their enormous hands and feet contrasted against comparatively small heads – characteristics beautifully demonstrated in this work.

Here, a reclining female figure dominates the rural landscape, her oversized bare feet and hands creating the playful perspective so closely associated with Jonaš. The combination of strong black linework and softly applied blue, ochre and green colouring gives the work considerable decorative appeal.

This example dates from 1992 and is individually pencil numbered 50/99 at lower left and signed and dated ’92 in pencil at lower right.

The date is particularly interesting for Australian collectors, as Jonaš exhibited in Australia during 1992, with exhibitions recorded in Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney and Canberra.

A highly characteristic example of Martin Jonaš’s distinctive European naïve style, beautifully presented in a substantial gilt frame.

Condition:

Condition: Very Good vintage condition – see detailed notes below.

The artwork presents very well behind glass, with attractive colouring and strong black linework.

Clearly signed and dated ’92 in pencil at lower right and numbered 50/99 at lower left.

The substantial gilt-finish timber frame remains very presentable, showing some minor marks, rubbing and small areas of finish loss consistent with age and previous display.

The wide cream matting and gilt inner slip remain attractive and complement the artwork beautifully.

The artwork has not been removed from its frame for inspection, and the precise printing technique has therefore not been independently confirmed.
