Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderfully characteristic signed and numbered work by Martin Jonaš (1924–1996), one of the leading artists associated with the celebrated Kovačica school of naïve art.

Jonaš was born in Kovačica in the former Yugoslavia and became internationally recognised for his highly individual depictions of rural village life. His unmistakable figures frequently feature dramatically exaggerated hands, feet and limbs contrasted against comparatively small heads.

This colourful 1992 composition captures a convivial rural gathering, with a group of figures seated closely together around food and drink. Their oversized hands and feet dominate the composition, while the warm ochre, green and yellow palette gives the scene a wonderfully lively and humorous character.

The work is signed and dated ’92 in pencil at lower right and individually numbered 8/99 at lower left, from a limited edition of only 99.

The 1992 date is particularly interesting for Australian collectors, as Jonaš exhibited in Australia during this period, with exhibitions recorded in Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney and Canberra.

Beautifully presented in a substantial gilt frame with wide cream matting and gilt inner slip, this is a highly decorative and immediately recognisable example of Martin Jonaš’s distinctive European naïve style.

Condition:

Condition: Very Good vintage condition – see detailed notes below.

The artwork presents very well behind glass with attractive colouring and strong linework.

Clearly signed and dated ’92 in pencil at lower right and numbered 8/99 at lower left.

The substantial gilt-finish timber frame remains very presentable, showing minor marks, rubbing and areas of finish wear consistent with age and previous display.

The wide cream matting and gilt inner slip complement the artwork beautifully.

The artwork has not been removed from its frame for inspection, and the precise printing technique has therefore not been independently confirmed.
