Mini Story or Hook:

A beautifully atmospheric original Australian landscape by Victorian oil and watercolour artist Mary Doxey Eggleton, depicting the countryside at Kameruka, NSW, near Merimbula.

The work captures a quintessentially Australian rural landscape, with mature gum trees, rolling countryside and distant blue hills beneath an expansive cloud-filled sky. Eggleton’s earthy palette and expressive handling give the scene a wonderfully peaceful sense of depth and distance.

The painting is signed “Mary Eggleton” at lower left and is particularly well documented on the reverse, where the artist has handwritten:

“Kameruka N.S.W. (near Merimbula)”

together with her full name Mary Doxey Eggleton, her Glen Iris, Victoria address and her membership of the Malvern Artists’ Society.

About the Artist:

Mary Doxey Eggleton (née Doxey) was a Victorian oil and watercolour artist who grew up in Benalla, Victoria, before moving to Melbourne, marrying and raising two sons.

Eggleton subsequently pursued her interest in art through classes at the Malvern Artists’ Society, where she studied under a number of tutors including Ron Cousins, Ruth Leber and Peter Dunne in oils, and Richard Alsop, Helen Schiller and Maggie McGrath in watercolours.

By approximately 2004, Eggleton recorded that she had been an accepted member of the Malvern Artists’ Society for 24 years, indicating an association extending back to around 1980.

Her exhibition record included a Third Prize from approximately 600 entries at the Parade College Art Exhibition, a commendation at Mansfield and recognition at Malvern Artists’ Society exhibitions, including being Highly Commended – Contemporary. Her artist biography also records participation and sales through exhibitions at locations including Yea, Bacchus Marsh, Mansfield, Canterbury Galleries, Bright and Mount Waverley.

Eggleton recorded that her oil and watercolour paintings had entered private collections throughout Victoria and elsewhere in Australia, as well as overseas.

Other works by Mary Eggleton have appeared on the Australian secondary art market, including landscapes depicting the NSW South Coast, making this identified Kameruka landscape a particularly appealing example of her work.

Presented in a substantial vintage gilt-toned frame with fabric-lined surround and decorative inner moulding, it is an impressive piece ready for display.
