A striking original black velvet painting by Australian artist Perc Miller, whose distinctive “true-to-life” Polynesian and Aboriginal studies became particularly associated with Queensland’s Gold Coast.

This atmospheric work depicts a nude female figure in profile, dramatically illuminated against the deep black velvet ground. Miller makes excellent use of the medium, with highlights through the woman’s hair, face and figure creating an almost sculptural three-dimensional quality.

The painting is signed “P. Miller” at the lower right and is presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame that complements its dramatic vintage character.

Of particular interest is the period clipping retained with the painting, headed “The Art of Perc Miller on BLACK VELVET.” It describes Miller’s realism and notes that his Polynesian and Aboriginal studies were becoming widely known and were being sent internationally. It also identifies his Studio/Gallery opposite the Surfers Paradise State School on the Gold Coast and pictures Perc Miller alongside Daph Miller, who conducted the gallery.
