A wonderfully atmospheric piece of 1970s Australian urban art, Terraced Houses captures a row of ageing inner-city homes beneath a striking burnt-orange evening sky.

Painted in 1974 and signed “St John” at the lower left, the work has a strong sense of period and place. The old terrace façade, decorative wrought-iron balcony, corrugated awnings, outbuildings and established trees are rendered with expressive brushwork, while the glowing orange sky provides a dramatic contrast to the shadowed buildings below.

The artist’s further identity has not been conclusively established, so we have deliberately avoided making an unsupported attribution. Importantly, however, the painting retains its original Cocks International Australia (CIA), Melbourne gallery label to the reverse. The label titles the work “Terraced Houses” and identifies it as “A Genuine Oil Painting by an Australian Artist” from the company’s Melbourne wholesale gallery.

The surviving label, signature and 1974 date provide an appealing piece of period provenance and firmly place the work within the Australian art market of the era.

Now more than 50 years old, this is a distinctive original Australian streetscape with wonderful 1970s character – ideal for a collector of vintage Australian art, architectural subjects or evocative urban landscapes.
