An Adventure in History
The Fort in the Forest is the first title in a new series of historical novels to be known as 'Adventures in History'. The central character in each story is founded on little-known real life people who are chosen to illuminate some unusual aspect of history.
This is the story of two young British ensigns, Richard Christie and George Paully, who were both captured by the Indians under Pontiac and their unusual experiences until they managed to escape. The background is Canada in the middle of the eighteenth century, in the uneasy and confused times which followed Montcalm's defeat by General James Wolfe at Quebec. The British, with a mere handful of soldiers, had to set about garrisoning thousands of square miles held by hostile Indian warriors, knowing full well that, should they meet with disaster, the French Canadians would be highly delighted.
