A wonderful piece of Australian sporting history, these vintage genuine leather boxing gloves were made in Australia by V.I.P. Sports of West Heidelberg, Victoria, and are believed to date from the late 1950s–1960s.
Their West Heidelberg origins add an interesting historical dimension. The district became closely associated with sport following the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and the establishment of the Olympic Village at West Heidelberg. While we have not established any direct connection between V.I.P. Sports or these gloves and the Olympic Games, their likely manufacture during Melbourne’s post-Olympic period makes them an evocative survivor of Australian sporting history.
Finished in rich burgundy/oxblood leather, the gloves retain their distinctive period V.I.P. Australia kangaroo branding together with the West Heidelberg maker’s stamp.
