Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderful survivor from the golden age of European sewing-machine manufacture, this circa 1950s Anker RR combines classic German engineering with an interesting Australian connection.

Manufactured by Anker-Werke AG of Bielefeld, Germany, the RR was designed as a versatile sewing and embroidery machine. Surviving examples date from the 1950s, placing this attractive black-and-gold machine firmly in the post-war era of beautifully engineered domestic sewing machines.

This example retains its handsome black enamel finish, gold ANKER lettering, decorative gold bed detailing and distinctive brass Anker-Werke anchor badge.

Adding to its Australian history is a period Amal Universal Motor manufactured by Amal Electrix Ltd., Melbourne, rated at 220–240V, 75 watts and 1/16 HP.

Perhaps most appealing to the collector is the surviving original Anker RR instruction handbook, titled Instruction Handbook for the Use and Preservation of the Anker RR Sow-Embroider Machine. The illustrated booklet includes operating and maintenance information specific to the RR.

Presented in its period portable carrying case, this is a characterful piece of 1950s sewing history suitable for a collector, vintage sewing enthusiast, display or restoration.

Condition:

Condition: Good vintage condition overall – see detailed notes below.

The machine presents attractively for its age with expected marks, surface wear and signs of previous use.

Black enamel finish and gold ANKER lettering and decorative detailing remain attractive.

Distinctive brass Anker-Werke anchor maker’s badge remains in place.

Mechanical components visible beneath the bed appear clean and substantially complete from visual inspection.

Period Amal Electrix Melbourne electric motor remains fitted.

Portable carrying case shows considerable age-related wear including scratches, scuffs, edge wear and deterioration to portions of the covering. Handle and metal fittings remain present.

Original Anker RR instruction handbook is included and shows considerable age and use, including staining, edge wear and deterioration/tearing to the cover.

The machine and its vintage electrical components have not been electrically tested or recently serviced and are therefore sold as untested. Given the age of the motor, wiring and electrical components, inspection by a suitably qualified person is recommended before connection to mains power or use.

A particularly appealing example due to the combination of the German Anker RR machine, period Australian-made Amal motor, portable case and surviving model-specific instruction handbook.
