Mini Story or Hook

An intriguing piece of vintage Australian studio pottery with a wonderfully organic handmade character.

The squat, rounded vessel has been wheel-thrown and finished in an earthy glaze, with freely applied dark abstract decoration and subtle mauve-toned highlights. The irregular form, visible throwing lines and variations in the glaze give the piece the individuality associated with handmade studio ceramics.

Of particular interest is the underside, which bears the handwritten/painted inscription “SW Joan Nun”. While this provides an interesting clue to the history of the piece, we have not been able to positively establish whether Joan Nun was the potter, an owner, recipient or otherwise associated with the vessel. Accordingly, it is being offered as an unattributed Australian studio pottery piece rather than making an unsupported artist attribution.
