🏺 Mini Story

This substantial stoneware water filter was produced by Bendigo Pottery, Australia’s oldest continuously operating pottery, renowned for robust functional wares designed for everyday use. Pieces like this were traditionally used with an internal ceramic candle filter, providing cool, gravity-fed drinking water long before modern refrigeration.

The impressed A.G. initials indicate the individual thrower (likely Alec Gill, who according to Australian Potters Marks worked there between 1935 to 1986), reflecting Bendigo Pottery’s long practice of identifying skilled potters within their production workshops.

With its rich iron glaze, incised throwing rings, and commanding scale, this piece now serves equally well as a sculptural interior object or a highly collectable example of Australian ceramic history.
