About:

This evocative vintage figural statue depicts a young grape harvester, basket in hand, raising a cluster of grapes overhead; a timeless symbol of rural labour, harvest, and abundance.

The sculpting style is known as 'spelter' and was likely popular around the late 19th–early 20th century in French decorative arts, with these kinds of figures being widely produced for domestic display.

Even today, these pieces hold incredible value and history, coming from a country that no longer exists: French Algeria, which remained under French colonial rule between 1830-1962. It thus could be argued that this piece is a true time capsule of that time.

Particularly interesting is the original retailer’s label from Bab el Oued, Algiers, reflecting France’s colonial-era trade networks and the export of decorative objects to North Africa.

A characterful and atmospheric piece with strong visual presence, this sculpture could fit alongside any collection or even make its own mark in any household or table. Simply a 'must have.'
