Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderfully colourful example of mid-century Japanese Majolica, this charming footed sugar bowl combines rich cobalt blue glazing with hand-painted moulded fruit, vegetables and foliage.

The elaborate lid is the standout feature, decorated with a profusion of colourful produce and crowned by a moulded pineapple finial. A purpose-made notch in the lid allows a sugar spoon to remain in place while the bowl is covered.

The bowl stands on three distinctive cobalt blue feet and features repeating raised green leaf decoration against a cream ground. The underside of one foot is marked “MADE JAPAN”, confirming its Japanese manufacture.

With its bold colours, sculptural decoration and wonderfully exuberant design, this is an appealing piece of vintage Japanese tableware and a fabulous display piece for collectors of Majolica and retro ceramics.
