Mini Story or Hook:

A wonderfully characterful piece of vintage English pottery depicting Sairey Gamp, one of Charles Dickens’ most memorable comic characters from his 1843–44 novel Martin Chuzzlewit.

Mrs Sarah “Sairey” Gamp is the rather eccentric nurse and midwife whose ever-present umbrella became so closely associated with the character that “gamp” entered British usage as a term for an umbrella.

Lancaster & Sandland captured her perfectly in this expressive character jug, with rosy cheeks, grey hair, wonderfully exaggerated facial features and, most distinctively, her famous umbrella incorporated into the handle.

Made in Hanley, Staffordshire, by Lancaster & Sandland Ltd, the jug carries the company’s green “Friendship and Trade” handshake backstamp together with REGD. DESIGN 826018.

At approximately 10 cm high, this is a particularly appealing display size and a great addition to a collection of Dickens memorabilia, English character jugs, Staffordshire pottery or vintage British ceramics.

Condition:

Condition: Good vintage condition – see detailed notes below.

The jug presents very well for its age, retaining a bright glossy glaze and attractive hand-painted facial detail.

There is some minor surface wear, marks and age-related patina consistent with a vintage ceramic piece.

The Lancaster & Sandland backstamp and registered design number remain clearly legible to the underside.

No obvious major chips or cracks are apparent from inspection and the photographs.
