About:
This is a cheerful vintage panda that serves as a classic example of mid-to-late 20th century Japanese novelty ceramics, with only slight wear.
These ceramics were likely produced in central Japan, with Seto serving as one of Japan’s most historically important ceramic centres and was heavily involved in exporting ceramics from the 1950s to the 1980s. However, the cities of Nagoya and Tajimi in the Mino Region are both equally possible.
Whether used as a planter, cookie jar a mug, or a stationery holder, this fun and humorous piece reflects the mass-produced hallmarks of Japanese novelty exports, with the face likely made from a mould, while features such as the eyes, mouth, and ears were hand-painted. It captures the playful, bold, and full of character style that has come to be expected from Japanese wares.
Featuring a figuratively novel form with an intentionally slightly asymmetrical shape, this panda-piece comes equipped with oversized eyes, textured “fur” detailing, and a bright yellow bow tie. It was likely designed as a fun gift or children’s mug during the golden era of Japanese export wares.
Today, pieces like this are equally seen as quirky display items, mugs, pen holders, or planters. Whatever the use, this piece is a charming and nostalgic conversation piece that instantly brings a smile to anybody who sees it.
