About:
This is a beautifully balanced piece of studio pottery, likely originating in Australia, done in a beautiful Leach Tradition, and finished in a soft ash-toned glaze with natural iron speckling and organic kiln variation.
The Leach Tradition itself was first established by Bernard Leach, and was made to emphasize functional, handcrafted ceramics which involved a fusion between Japanese folk pottery (Mingei) and Western (English) aesthetics. It allowed for greater cultural exchange, and celebrated the inherent qualities of using clay, with glazes and forms which didn't hide their hand-crafted forms.
This is a beautiful example of that same concept, with the lines being both a clear example of the expert potters hands, and the speckling creates this constellations-like expanse of beauty which would allow it to stand out on any shelf, and in any environment.
The incised “LS” mark suggests an individual potter who was able to use this style to draw all the natural and artificially-thrown beauty to create a timeless piece that is ideal as a small planter, a vessel, or decorative object used for shelves or side tables.
